What is a butt joint?

There are several techniques used when installing tiles including the butt joint. A butt joint creates a minimalist look as there is no formal grout joint and the tiles are tightly positioned together.

In order for butt jointing to be effective, it requires working with dimensionally cut stone such as our Bluestone honed walling. This is because the technique can promote failure of some stone products.

In some instances, butt jointing can cause the stone to flake or chip as a result of direct contact with the neighbouring tiles causing a tripping hazard and damage the integrity of the stone itself.

If you aren’t using stone that is dimensionally cut, consistent open joints are recommended at 4-6mm spacing. However, for peace of mind and an optimal result, you should seek the advice of a professional contractor.
