Nestled behind the sand dunes in Amagansett, Stelle Lomont Rouhani Architects have created a home where memories of summers at the beach are made. “Shore House” comprises of two offset stacked boxes which take advantage of the incredible position and it’s unforgettable views. Conscious of the natural landscape, the design team created a 3000sf building that was sensitive to its surroundings with its natural materials, organic colour tones and open floor plan.

By stacking the architectural boxes, Stelle Lomont Rouhani Architects worked with the typography of the sandy site. The cantilevered volume above the dunes creates a protected and private outdoor sitting area on the first-floor. The connection to the outdoors is further strengthened in each of the three guest bedrooms on the lower levels with their own outdoor access to the dune path leading directly to the beach.

An open staircase is curtained by an expansive wooden screen that leads up to the home’s second floor and roof deck. Designed to make the most of the ocean view, the second floor houses the main living spaces. But it’s the outside that draws your attention. Slide open the large glass panes and the interior room becomes one large outdoor porch ideal for entertaining and capturing the natural outlook.

Height restrictions may have limited the footprint of the rooftop space but didn’t discourage Stelle Lomont Rouhani Architects from making it another desirable outdoor destination for the homeowners. By lowering the ceiling of the master retreat and entry on the second floor, the architects were able to drop a portion of the roof to create enough floor space for a spa and outdoor shower with a spectacular view.

With a desire for a sustainable home, Stelle Lomont Rouhani Architects paid close attention to protecting the home from the elements. Moveable timber screens were mounted on the exterior to shield the interior from the intense heat of the southern sun. A geothermal system was installed and photovoltaic panels as well as a vegetated upper roof to reduce the load.

Zinc panels wrapped the exterior of the architectural boxes which marries well with the red cedar, timber and stone used throughout the design. Modest, yet aesthetically beautiful, furnishings and a restrained colour palette complete the interior – a collaborative effect between the architects and clients.

“Shore House” is the perfect example of how manipulating a simple form can enclose the interior spaces while still creating a sense of place and foster the connection with the natural environment.
