Tropical resort sensation

A young family with a love of everything outdoors, the client of this project required that the pool be the centrepiece of an exotic landscaping design that now resembles a resort getaway. The pool needed to serve a number of purposes, including providing a safe area for children to play in with different break out areas, moving water and lush plantings.

Originally the site was quite dark, with many large trees making the space feel somewhat overcrowded. Therefore, the initial work of the project saw the removal of enough trees to provide sunlight and open space for the pool area while still maintaining the leafy surrounds and privacy for the family.

The pool itself is an assortment of straight lines and sweeping curves with three-meter wide entry steps, two deep-end swim-outs and a shallow area for the children – with air jets and water spouts for playing.

A custom timber decking surrounding the kids’ side of the pool offers enough space for either an outdoor lounge or outdoor table setting. Floating Raven granite stepping stones dividing the shallow area from the main pool provide access to the daybed hut, an idyllic spot for the parents to unwind while keeping a watchful eye on the kids in the pool.

Adjacent to the hut is an elevated timber deck constructed around a mature tree fern, perfect for sun lounges or for entering the deep end of the pool. Working with a material palette of timber decking, granite coping and stepping stones to Alpine dry stone walling for the raised pool walls creates a sense of warmth throughout the design. The landscaping feels intimate and welcoming, while the integration of the hard and softer landscaping brings the project together perfectly.

The owners are thrilled with the end result, as there are now so many different ‘outdoor rooms’ for them to use around the pool; paving, timber decking, daybed hut and lawn. The owners have said that they have a favorite spot for each time of the day as the sun travels over the pool, permitting them to maximize their outdoor living experience.
