Californian Dreaming Delivers

Owing much of its inspiration to 1960s Californian architecture and landscape cues, this outstanding design was created in close collaboration between ENOKI’s Susanna Bilardo and the client.

The stunning home sits lightly on a boulder-filled site, on a setback lower level which is hidden from the street, allowing for privacy of the owners. For the front of the property, geometric steppers were employed in the driveway to offer a tactile surface to the high-traffic space. The geometric steppers wrap around the property’s side access as well as along a front path, which leads up natural sandstone boulder-flanked steps to the home’s entrance.

Generous natural light is provided for the interior by full-length windows which continue along the width of two anterior rooms. The inside is open-plan, with a series of Crackenback natural sandstone walls used to distinguish the space. A sense of continuity between interior and exterior is achieved with a Crackenback sandstone blade wall linking outside and in.

The fabulous rear of the home opens up to two upper decks; one for dining and entertaining and the other for lounging – with the latter area shaded by an existing Gum tree and covering the lower pool area.

A staircase placed centrally between the upper decks then takes you down to the garden below, with its two distinct and functional areas.

Natural Bluestone paving in a flagstone pattern is used around the pool and offers color and textural relief to the green lawn grass astride it while glass fencing between the two areas offers a sense of space and openness.

The outcome of the process is an amazing home for entertaining and relaxing, all the time reminiscent of classic Californian design.
